Debt

I subscribe to a news brief that shows the numbers our nation is facing in debt.  Notable, that is for sure.

The Coming Fiscal Cliff:

National figures:
* U.S. Tax revenue: $2,170,000,000,000
* Fed budget: $3,820,000,000,000
* New debt: $ 1,650,000,000,000
* National debt: $14,271,000,000,000
* Recent budget cuts: $ 38,500,000,000

Let’s remove 8 zeros and pretend it's a household budget:
*Annual family income: $21,700
*Money the family spent: $38,200
*New debt on the credit card: $16,500
*Outstanding balance on the credit card: $142,710
* Total budget cuts so far: $38.50

Haircut and Choir

I got my haircut on my birthday on Tuesday.  It's a big change and I'm still getting used to it.  Last night at the Ward Christmas party everyone thought I had my hair in a ponytail.  It was funny when I turned my head, they would stop our conversation dead in its' tracks to mention my haircut.  I should have done this a long time ago.  My hair used to take so much time to do in the morning.  I would avoid going swimming and things like that just so I wouldn't have to re-do my long hair.

Last week Eric had his choir performance.  Here is the only picture I got of him.  He loves to sing and he has a good voice.  I hope he keeps taking choir all throughout his schooling.

Yummy

So Bruce comes up to Jared and says, "Dad, do you want a yummy?"  Jared looks in Bruce's hand and sees an olive, then looks in Bruce's mouth and sees his mouth full of yummy's.  Then Jared says, "Sure, I'll have a yummy."  Bruce then holds out his hand and hands Jared the olive.

Cutest little 3-year old we know.

Eric and Joseph had the rare privilege of going to a BYU football game in Provo a month ago with our neighbors, the Sullivans, who had extra tickets.  They had a blast.  The family they went with invited them to stay overnight in Provo.  It had snowed and so the stadium was pretty empty.  But the boys got to build a snow fort during the game.

Brigham City Temple

Thank you to the nice elderly man who took our family picture!

We went to the Brigham City Temple Open House in the middle of September.  What an awesome experience!  This is our temple.  Our temple used to be the Logan, Utah temple, which is a 25-30 minute drive through the Wellsville, Utah mountains, but now we only have to drive 20 minutes to Brigham City to get to the nearest temple.  Yeah!

Warm Feet

In the winter months, it is not uncommon for me to get chilled in the evenings.  My feet are my biggest problem with this malady.  As I crawl into bed for the night, I often have to crawl back out of bed because my feet are so cold that I can't fall asleep.  And if by chance I do fall asleep, I awaken several times because my body is working so hard to warm itself.  I'll wake up sweaty and even more chilled, only to have to crawl into a hot tub of water.

So, I've learned to just get up and go sit in a hot tub of water for 20 minutes until my body is warmed through.

That was until 5 nights ago....

And this is why I am writing this post.

I have found another faster way to get warm.  And it doesn't require me getting into a hot tub of water.

I get into bed, pull the blankets over my head and create a 'furnace' under the covers.  I breathe under the blankets for as long as I can stand, all the while my entire body is completely covered.  When I feel suffocated, I uncover my mouth only, and breathe the fresh air outside of the covers, while still remaining completely covered.  Within 5 minutes my hands have warmed up, and I fall asleep.

No more waking up shivering and sweaty.  No more frozen feet.  No more late night baths.

I have done this the last 5 nights with the exact same results.  It is a miracle.

I had often wondered if I were to ever lose my access to hot water, how I would warm up and fall asleep.  Now I know!

Judgement

"While you should be friendly with all people, select with great care those whom you wish to have close to you. They will be your safeguards in situations where you may vacillate between choices, and you in turn may save them." - Gordon B. Hinckley

Amen!  Close friends influence you.  And you influence them.  Make sure you choose your close friends very carefully.  Make sure you have excellent judgement so that you never, ever lead them astray.  If you don't have excellent judgement, get it.

I watched an interview where Apostle Quentin L. Cook and his wife were interviewed.  At the end of the interview, Sister Cook was asked what advice she might give to those women who weren't married, but who were seeking a mate.  She said something to the effect of finding a man who has excellent judgement.  She said that Quentin has always had excellent judgement and she has been blessed because of it.

Imagine it?  Marriage to a man who has the ability to see easily right from wrong and thereby live his life according to it.

My own judgement has been awful for most of my life.  I am seeking the gift of excellent judgement and the Lord is giving to me.  It is a gift worth seeking out.   Of course, my husbands judgement has been awful too.  Thank the Lord for redemption and the chance to change!

A Great Pick-Me-Up

Onward Christian Soldiers.  If you need a pick-me-up, like I often do, here is an excellent discourse by President Benson that does the job.   I underlined a few of my favorite sentences.  Have a great day, my friends!

Christ and the Constitution

(Ezra Taft Benson. Conference Report, April 1967)
Nearly two thousand years ago a perfect man walked the earth: Jesus the Christ. He was the son of a heavenly father and an earthly mother. He is the God of this world, under the Father. He taught men truth, that they might be free. His example and precepts provide the great standard, the only sure way, for all mankind. He became the first and only one who had the power to reunite his body with his spirit after death. By his power all men who have died shall be resurrected. Before him one day we all must stand to be judged by his laws. He lives today and in the not too distant future shall return, in triumph, to subdue his enemies, to reward men according to their deeds, and to assume his rightful role and to rule and reign in righteousness over the entire earth.
Nearly two hundred years ago, some inspired men walked this land of America—not perfect men, but men raised up by the Perfect Man to perform a great work. Foreordained were they, to lay the foundation of this republic, the Lord’s base of operations in these latter days. Blessed by the Almighty in their struggle for liberty and independence, the power of heaven rested on these founders as they drafted that great document for governing men, the Constitution of the United States. Like the Ten Commandments, the truths on which the Constitution was based were timeless; and also, as with the Decalogue, the hand of the Lord was in it. They filled their mission well. From them we were endowed with a legacy of liberty—a constitutional republic.
But today the Christian constitutionalist mourns for his country. He sees the spiritual and political faith of his fathers betrayed by wolves in sheep’s clothing. He sees the forces of evil increasing in strength and momentum under the leadership of Satan, the archenemy of freedom. He sees the wicked honored and the valiant abused. He senses that his own generation faces Gethsemanes and Valley Forges that may yet rival or surpass the trials of the early apostles and the men of ’76. And this gives him cause to reflect on the most basic of fundamentals, the reason for our existence. Once we understand the fundamental purpose for mortality, we may more easily chart a correct course in the perilous seas that are engulfing our nation.
This life is a probation: a probation in which you and I prove our mettle, a probation that has eternal consequences for each of us. And now is our time and season—as every generation has had theirs—to learn our duties and to do them.
The Lord has so arranged things in this life that men are free agents unto themselves to do good or evil. The Lord allows men to go only so far, but the latitude is great enough that some men promote much wickedness and other men much righteousness.
Clearly, there would be little trial of faith if we received our full reward immediately for every goodly deed, or immediate retribution for every sin. But that there will be an eventual reckoning for each, there is no question.
The Lord is displeased with wickedness, and he will help those who oppose it. But he has given all of us freedom to choose, while reserving for himself our final judgment. And herein lies the hope of all Christian constitutionalists. Why? Because the fight for freedom is God’s fight, and free agency is an eternal principle. It existed before this world was formed; it will exist forever. Some men may succeed in denying some aspects of this God-given freedom to their fellowmen, but their success is temporary. Freedom is a law of God, an eternal law. And, like any of God’s laws, men cannot break it with impunity. They can only break themselves upon it. So as long as a man stands for freedom, he stands with God. Therefore, any man will be eternally vindicated and rewarded who stands for freedom.
Men receive blessings by obedience to God’s laws, and without obedience there is no blessing. Before the final triumphal return of the Lord, the question as to whether we may save our constitutional republic is simply based on two factors: the number of patriots and the extent of their obedience.
That the Lord desires to save this nation that he raised up, there is no doubt. But that he leaves it up to us, with his help, is the awful reality.
There is a time and season for all righteous things, and many of life’s failures arise when men neither take the time nor find the season to perform their eternal duties. What, then, in this time and season may best equip us to save our Christian constitutional legacy, while at the same time rescuing our own souls? May I humbly submit six suggestions:
1. Spirituality. In the Book of Mormon, sacred to me as scripture, the Lord states that America is a land choice above all others and that it shall remain free so long as the inhabitants worship the God of the land, Jesus Christ.
Certainly spirituality is the foundation upon which any battle against sin and tyranny must be waged. And because this is basically the struggle of the forces of Christ versus antichrist, it is imperative that our people be in tune with the supreme leader of freedom, the Lord our God. Men stay in tune only when their lives are in harmony with God, for apart from God we cannot succeed, but as a partner with God, we cannot fail. We must be in the amoral and immoral world, but not of it.
2. Balance. We have many responsibilities, and one cannot expect the full blessings of a kind Providence if he neglects any major duty.
A man has duties to his church, his home, his country, and his profession or job.
Duty to church: Each man, in communication with God, must determine his responsibility to the Church. This becomes a serious consideration in a day when many pulpits are being turned into pipelines of collectivist propaganda, preaching the social gospel and denying basic principles of salvation. The least any Christian can do is to study daily the word of the Lord and seek divine aid through daily prayer. We invite all men to examine prayerfully The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints—the Mormon Church—which I testify is the Church of Christ, restored to the earth and led today by a prophet of God.
Duty to home: Fathers, you cannot delegate your duty as the head of the home. Mothers, train up your children in righteousness; do not attempt to save the world and thus let your own fireside fall apart. For many years now the Mormon Church has advised parents to set aside one night a week when the family meets together for an evening at home. At this time family goals and duties are discussed, spiritual guidance given, and recreation enjoyed. To this end the Church has published and distributes, free of charge, a home evening manual with helpful suggestions for each week’s activities.
The duty of parents is to be of help to each other and to their children; then comes their duty to their neighbors, community, nation, and world, in that order. The home is the rock foundation, the cornerstone of civilization. No nation will ever rise above its homes.
Duty to country: No one can delegate his duty to preserve his freedom, for the price of liberty is still eternal vigilance. There are now thousands of businessmen behind the iron curtain who, if they had their lives to live over, would balance their time more judiciously and give more devotion to their civic responsibilities. An ounce of energy in the preservation of freedom is worth a ton of effort to get it back once it is lost.
Duty to job: Every man should provide the necessities of food, clothing, and shelter for his family. As Paul wrote to Timothy: “But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.” (1 Tim. 5:8.)
Indolence invites the benevolent straightjacket of the character-destroying welfare state. But a man pays too high a price for worldly success if in his climb to prominence he sacrifices his spiritual, home, and civic responsibilities. How a person should apportion his time among his several duties requires good judgment and is a matter over which each should invite divine assistance.
3. Courageous action. I believe that, while we should ask the Lord’s blessings on all our doings and should never do anything upon which we cannot ask his blessings, we should not expect the Lord to do for us what we can do for ourselves. I believe in faith and works, and that the Lord will bless more fully the man who works for what he prays for than he will the man who only prays.
Today you cannot effectively fight for freedom and not be attacked, and those who think they can are deceiving themselves. While I do not believe in stepping out of the path of duty to pick up a cross I do not need, a man is a coward who refuses to pick up a cross that clearly lies within his path.
A man must not only stand for the right principles, but he must also fight for them. Those who fight for principle can be proud of the friends they’ve gained and the enemies they’ve earned.
4. Education. We must each of us do our homework. We must be wise as serpents; for, as the apostle Paul said, we wrestle “against the rulers of the darkness. . . , against spiritual wickedness in high places.” (Eph. 6:12.)
We are going through the greatest, most insidious propaganda campaign of all time. Even the character-destroying “credibility gap” seems to be gaining respectability. We cannot believe all we read, and what we can believe is not all of the same value. We must sift. We must learn by study and prayer.
Study the scriptures and study the mortals who have been most consistently accurate about the most important things. When your freedom and your eternal welfare are at stake, your information had better be accurate.
5. Health. To meet and beat the enemy will require clear heads and strong bodies. Hearts and hands grow strong, based on what they are fed. Let us take into our bodies and souls only those things that will make us more effective instruments. We need all the physical, mental, and moral power we can get.
Righteous concern about conditions is commendable when it leads to constructive action. But undue worry is debilitating. When we have done what we can do, then let’s leave the rest to God.
Man needs beneficial recreation, a change of pace that refreshes him for heavy tasks ahead. Man also must take time to meditate, to sweep the cobwebs from his mind, so that he might get a more firm grip on the truth and spend less time chasing phantoms and dallying in projects of lesser worth.
Clean hearts and healthful food, exercise, early sleep and fresh air, wholesome recreation and mediation, combined with optimism that comes from fighting for the right and knowing you’ll eventually win for keeps—this is the tonic every true Christian patriot needs and deserves.
6. Be Prepared. We have a duty to survive, not only spiritually but also physically. Not survival at the cost of principles, for this is the surest way to defeat, but a survival that comes from intelligent preparation. We face days ahead that will test the moral and physical sinews of all of us.
The scriptural parable of the five wise and the five foolish virgins is a reminder that one can wait too long before he attempts to get his spiritual and temporal house in order. Are we prepared?
A man should not only be prepared to protect himself physically, but he should also have on hand sufficient supplies to sustain himself and his family in an emergency. For many years the leaders of the Mormon Church have recommended, with instructions, that every family have on hand at least a year’s supply of basic food, clothing, fuel (where possible), and provisions for shelter. This has been most helpful to families suffering temporary reverses. It can and will be useful in many circumstances in the days ahead. We also need to get out of financial bondage, to be debt free.
Now these suggestions regarding spirituality, balance, courageous action, education, health, and preparation are given not only to help equip one for the freedom struggle, but also to help equip one for eternal life.
Those who hesitate to get into this fight because it is controversial fail to realize that life’s decisions should be based on principles, not on public opinion polls.
There were men at Valley Forge who weren’t sure how the revolution would end, but they were in a much better position to save their own souls and their country than those timid men whose major concern was deciding which side was going to win, or how to avoid controversy.
The basic purpose of life is to prove ourselves, not to be with the majority when it is wrong. Those who hesitate to get into the fight for freedom because they’re not sure if we’re going to win fail to realize that we will win in the long run, and for good.
Time is on the side of truth, and truth is eternal. Those who are fighting against freedom and other eternal principles of right may feel confident now, but they are shortsighted.
This is still God’s world. The forces of evil, working through some mortals, have made a mess of a good part of it. But it is still God’s world. In due time, when each of us has had a chance to prove himself—including whether or not we are going to stand up for freedom—God will interject himself, and the final and eternal victory shall be for free agency. And then shall those weak-willed souls on the sidelines and those who took the wrong but temporarily popular course lament their decisions.
Let us get about our business, for any Christian constitutionalist who retreats from this battle jeopardizes his life here and hereafter. Seldom has so much responsibility hung on so few, so heavily; but our numbers are increasing, and we who have been warned have a responsibility to warn our neighbor.
To his disciples, the Lord said that they should be of good cheer, for he had overcome the world—and so he had. And so can we, if we are allied with him. Time is on the side of truth, and the wave of the future is freedom. There is no question of the eventual, final, and lasting triumph of righteousness. The major question for each of us is what part will we play in helping to bring it to pass.
This is a glorious hour in which to live. Generations past and future will mark well our response to our awe-some duty. There is a reason why we have been born in this day. Ours is the task to try to live and perpetuate the principles of the Christ and the Constitution in the face of tremendous odds. May we, with God’s help, have strength for the battle and fill our mission in honor for God, family, and country.
The Lord declared that “if ye are prepared ye shall not fear.” (D&C 38:39). May we prepare, then fear not, I humbly pray.

Worst Day of Her Life

Yesterday was the worst day of Vanessa's life.  She vomited the entire day.  Poor thing.  She was taking an anti-inflammatory for the swelling from her tonsillectomy last week and yesterday she went through the withdrawal of coming off of that medication.  It was awful.  I can sympathize with her.  Within the first year of my marriage I got a horrible middle ear infection.  I had to go on a prednisone (anti-inflammatory) and when I went off of it, I went through the same withdrawal Vanessa went through.  You think you are going to die.

Today she is doing so much better.  And she hasn't even had any of her medicines for the pain in her throat.  Joseph is on the mend as well.  He still needs pain meds, but he never went through the withdrawal.  Yeah!

Tonsils Out

Vanessa and Joseph got their tonsils out today.  What a deal!  I can't believe how well they are both doing.  Two of my friends in my ward brought dinner to us tonight.  It was so yummy!  They brought clam chowder, rolls, brownies, and fresh cut veggies.  It was wonderful!  Vanessa ate 4 small bowls, and Joseph ate 3 small bowls.  It was shocking to me.  When I got my tonsils out when I was about 10 years old, I wouldn't eat a thing.  I got so sick because I wouldn't eat or drink.  I'm not sure where my parents were during my recovery because no one was watching to make sure I was eating and drinking.  I remember asking Deborah, my sister, who had gotten her tonsils out that exact same day as me, to get me a popsicle.  She was 8 years old at the time and she was doing much better than me.  I remember being sick for days and days.  Anyway, my kids are doing really well.

I also went to a neurologist to have him tell me what he thinks of my MRI.  My discs from L3 down to S1 are all bulging and torn.  The disc space between L5-S1 is especially degenerated and the doctor believes that that is where my nerves are getting impinged and causing all of my right leg weakness and right foot pain.  My doctor recommended surgery and fusing that spot in my spine so that my nerves won't be so smashed.  The insurance company requires a paper trail of physical therapy and cortisone shots before they'll approve paying for a fusion surgery.  It is a $40,000 surgery.  I don't want to go that route.  I will be doing the shots, but really, really hoping to avoid the fusion.

Doctors

We've been to the doctors' offices a lot lately.  Rex had a 103.3 temperature for 2 days so we ended up in the emergency room Sunday evening with him.  He has strep throat.  Antibiotics are fixing him up nicely.  He gave us a real scare because his fever didn't break for 2 1/2 days after the antibiotics were started.

Since we are so close to meeting our insurance deductible, I decided to go back to get another MRI on my back to see why I am not recovering from my previous back problems, in fact I have gotten worse.  So I went for the MRI.  I got the results back and was told that L3-L5 discs are all bulging.  My primary care doctor wanted to send me to a pain management doctor and I told him, no, that I want to see a neurologist.  I don't want to have to live my life managing my pain.  I want to be free of this pain.  If the neurologist tells me there is something they can do surgically to take some pressure off my nerves in my spine, I will seriously consider surgery.  My right foot is so painful, it makes it very difficult to walk around.  The best way for me to describe it is to imagine being at Disneyland or Lagoon all day long and you go back to your hotel room to get some rest, your feet hurt so bad from being on your feet all day and they ache and hurt.  Now, times that by about 10 and that is how my right foot feels all the time.  All night long.  All day long.  This has been going of for about 2 years.  My right leg is weak too.

Then we had to take Joseph in to an ENT (ear, nose and throat) doctor because his lymph nodes in his neck are swollen for no apparent reason.  The ENT doctor told him several months ago to watch it and come back if they don't go down.  Well, they haven't gone down.  So we took him and Vanessa back.  Vanessa's tonsils are gigantic and she often gets sore throats.  As soon as the doctor looked in Vanessa's throat he said, "Oh yeah, that tonsil is pretty bad."  He didn't give us a single argument for her.  With Joseph he was a little more hesitant.  But, we have a date set for November 13th for them both to have their tonsils removed. That's just 2 days before my and Jared's 15 year anniversary.  I told Vanessa it is her way to pay me back for the gall bladder surgery I had on her 9 year old birthday.  :D

Secret Combination

With another election coming upon us, we all need to be warned against upholding communism.  This book written by Verlan Anderson, has a simple and plain explanation of Communism and the Constitution.  A must read!  Study what Communism is and see if you support it.  Or if you uphold our Constitution.

Quoting the book:

Constitution vs. Communism

President David O. McKay has identified Communism as this secret combination of Satan which threatens our very existence today. (Statements on Communism and the Constitution of the United States, p. 5)
He has also said:   The position of this Church on the subject of Communism has never changed. We consider it
the greatest satanical threat to peace, prosperity, and the spread of God’s work among men that exists on the face of the earth.…We therefore commend and encourage every person and every group who is sincerely seeking to study Constitutional principles and awaken a sleeping and apathetic people to the alarming conditions that are rapidly advancing about us. (Improvement Era, June 1966, p. 477)

Back in 1940, the First Presidency of the Church issued a statement on Communism in which
they said:
We again warn our people in America of the constantly increasing threat against our inspired Constitution…These revolutionists are using a technique that is as old as the human race—a fervid but false solicitude for the unfortunate over whom they thus gain mastery, and then enslave them…Latter-day Saints cannot be true to their faith and lend aid, encouragement, or sympathy to any of these false philosophies. They will prove snares to their feet. (David O. McKay, Statements on Communism and the Constitution of the United States, pp. 7-8)

A few days after he was made President of the Church, David O. McKay said:   A third World War is inevitable unless Communism is soon subdued. Communism yields to nothing but force. (Statements on Communism and the Constitution of the United States, p. 13)

PRESIDENT THOMAS S. MONSON
Of all the individuals I know, who would like to be here today, it would be Ezra Taft Benson, the Prophet of the Lord, and the President of the Church. For, he loved Verlan Andersen, and he loves all of us....As I describe my friend Verlan, I would like to say that he was a man of integrity. When he knew he was right, he followed it. There was no discussion. There was no temptation.... Verlan Andersen never endorsed that with which he did not agree, for he wanted to be able to defend his position, and his position was always on the side of the Lord. He truly was a man of integrity....(President Thomas S. Monson, speaking at the funeral of Elder H. Verlan Andersen, July 20, 1992)

Google Chrome and Warts

Google Chrome.  Can I just say how much time Google Chrome is saving me.  Check it out if you have slow browsing times.

It's Friday!  This week has flown by.  Wow!

I have had a wart on my left hand for several years.  Strangely, and suddenly, I have 5 more warts which have shown up on both hands.  So I got on Amazon.com, found a product, ordered it, and I'll be seeing if it can get rid of these warts.  They are tiny.  And they don't resemble the 'normal' cauliflower looking warts we are all used to seeing.  I hope I don't have too much trouble getting rid of them.

In other news, I have found an amazing resource for learning more about the Constitution and the great evils going on in our government today.  Look up Scott Bradley from Logan, UT.  He has a webpage with short video clips to listen to.  We owe it to our children and grandchildren to keep the knowledge of freedom alive and thriving.

Who Is Behind It?

Have you been reading the Presidential debate discussion boards?  Did you watch the Presidential debate the other night?  The criticisms that are flying around out there right now about both candidates are many.

We can disagree with both candidates and their ideas for our future.  We can spar back and forth about their failed promises.  We can argue that both sides of the aisle are right or wrong.  We can challenge the idea that the mainstream of the American people are turned around, facing the wrong direction, if you will, from true principles of freedom and the proper role of government.

If you haven't read the books out there that are written by Ezra Taft Benson as well as one of the books he recommended written by Gary Allen, None Dare Call It Conspiracy, you are arguing, challenging, and sparring back and forth about the wrong things.  You must read these books in order to understand what is going on behind the scenes and who it is that runs our government.  You will be deceived if you don't educate yourself about what is going on behind the scenes.

I love America.  I love and cherish my freedom.  If I could be any more persuasive in telling all freedom loving people to read these books, I would be.

My father retired from the Army Reserves a number of years ago, in fact I want to say about 12ish years ago.  He last rank was Lieutenant Colonel.  You would think that I would know a lot about governments with how highly ranked my father was.  You might imagine that we had late night chats with my father around the kitchen table, or in the front room gathered around his knee being taught about how dangerous governments can be.  You would think I might be taught about what the qualities are that make a man a true and honest character, who loves freedom and what the principles are of freedom.

I was not taught one word of it.

What I was taught is that my Father went in to the Army for the benefits of working for the government.  Although we didn't sit around the kitchen table and discuss it, I heard my Father on several occasions speak about how the government had a great pension, lifetime healthcare priviledges, and absolute security if you retire from service to it.  Absolute security.  I felt encouraged to work for the government myself in order to obtain that security.

Think of it.  Government jobs being Absolute security.

I was't told stories of people who were innovative.  I wasn't told stories of brave men and women who came out into the frontier to find piece from evil governments.

If you aren't teaching your children or learning yourself about how wicked people can become, then I exhort you to become a little more sober, a little more concerned, a little less worried about money and the daily grind, and pull yourself to the table of learning.  I have been learning about governments and the proper role of government and I have learned that the idea that the government is who will grant you Absolute security is false.  Security comes from you knowing the true principles of freedom.  Your security is in God and following his laws.

I mean no harm to my Father.  I love him.  But I feel ashamed about the many, many missed opportunities that came my way because of the sense he had that he needed to look to someone else to provide him Absolute security.  In his case, he looked to our Federal Government.  I wish he would have talked to me about thrift and self reliance.  I wish he would have spoken of trusting in yourself to work hard, save money, and the true principles that govern a free society.

Alas, I am left with learning these lessons late in life.  I would say that I am late to the game.  But, I am learning as much as I can and hoping to instill in my own children the love for these principles everyday, and even their friends get a little now and then.

And onward I go.

More On Roles....

I have spent a great deal of time over the last 10 years pondering my purpose in life.  It has been an intense struggle, as you know from reading my previous blog posts.  An amazing thing is happening as I have become more and more grounded in this knowledge, and that is my testimony and sharing it with others.  I find special satisfaction and joy in telling the youth who they are.  Vanessa, who is now 13, is turning into a beautiful young woman.  She has caught the attention of the neighborhood boys.  They come around frequently, supposedly to see Eric, and they do enjoy his friendship for sure.  But, I see their eyes light up when they see Vanessa come around.  Anyway, these young men invariably search me out.  I love to talk with them and I take every chance I can get to open my mouth and bare testimony to them.  My favorite thing to tell them is who they are.  The joy that has come into my life because of this one thing has been immense.

It just goes to show me that weak things can become strong.  The Lord gives to those who come hungry and thirsty.  I have been fed and now I hope to give back as much as I can and for as long as I can.

Sharing A Recipe

If you've ever been to Olive Garden and ordered their Capellini Pomodoro, I have found a copycat recipe from the allrecipes.com website.  This is so yummy and super simple to make.  I substituted the roma tomatoes with my garden tomatoes, big boy variety.  I would not suggest making these without fresh garden tomatoes.  You really need the sweetness from the garden tomato to make this taste the way it should.  I have read that a brand named Campari sells yummy canned tomatoes, and supposedly you can find them at either Sams Club or Costco if you don't have access to fresh garden tomatoes.  I have yet to look for them though because we have had plenty of fresh tomatoes from our own garden.  Enjoy!

Capellini Pomodoro

Ingredients

  • 1 (16 ounce) package angel hair pasta
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1/2 onion, chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cups roma (plum) tomatoes, diced
  • 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
  • 1 (10.75 ounce) can low-sodium chicken broth
  • crushed red pepper to taste
  • freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh basil
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Directions

  1. Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Add pasta and cook for 8 minutes or until al dente; drain.
  2. Pour olive oil in a large deep skillet over high-heat. Saute onions and garlic until lightly browned. Reduce heat to medium-high and add tomatoes, vinegar and chicken broth; simmer for about 8 minutes.
  3. Stir in red pepper, black pepper, basil and cooked pasta, tossing thoroughly with sauce. Simmer for about 5 more minutes and serve topped with grated cheese.

Bruce's Birthday

We celebrated Bruce's birthday on Sunday.  He turned 3.  Wow, how time flies!  We had our sweet neighbors down to share cake and ice cream with.  They have become like family to us and we treasure their friendships.  Dare I say that they are the first family that Jared and I have become friends with that we both are equal in our friendships.  Just to explain.  Jared knew the husband from work.  I met his wife soon after we moved 3 lots away from them and we became friends.  In the past, we would double date with couples where Jared was a long time friend of the husbands and I would 'try' to become friends with their wife.  It has just never seemed to work out very well.  There always has seemed to be a wall between me and the wife and as soon as I am done asking all of the questions I can think of, the conversations die.

Bruce is a sweetheart, who gives us as much trouble as his other siblings.  He is better tempered these days and more reasonable.  His vocabulary and sentence structure are amazing.  He is strong and coordinated.  He loves to ride his bike with training wheels.  He has captured the hearts of many of the adults in the neighborhood and they love him.  He has also effectively captured their sympathy for me in raising this fire ball.

Greek Yogurt

I tried Chobani Greek yogurt the other day.  Then, I tried Brown Cow Greek yogurt.  It was yummy!  The kids love it too.  I am going to see about introducing the plain flavor greek yogurt into my cheesecake recipe and my Texas sheet cake recipe.  There is no fat in it and it's loaded with protein.

Blood Pressure, Football and Birthdays

The boys have started football.

Jared had his 37th birthday.

Jared is fighting high blood pressure.  He has had if for several years, but recently at the doctors office the doctor said he needed to be on medication.  So, he is taking a blood pressure medicine and hoping to see if his blood pressure can come down.  The doctor also suggested getting a test to check his renal arterial something, haha.  We are worried about him because he is really young to be starting on medications.

Lightening Strikes Twice?

I am not sure what the odds are for me to get another infection in my arm in almost the exact same spot, BUT ON THE OTHER arm.  So, I have to take back that my arms will not be balanced.  I now have the same sized arms again.  I am trying something different to heal it though.  I have smothered my arm with Triple Antibiotic cream and then wrapped my arm with Saran Wrap.  I am hoping the antibiotic cream will kill the infection, which hasn't spread anymore since I've started doing this.  If in the morning I don't see improvement, I'll make the call to the doctor.

One Arm bigger than the Other

So the infection in my arm is gone, but my left arm is still swollen a little.  I am probably the only one who would notice the difference in the size of my arms.

We have been super busy.  The boys started football and Jared helping coach Joseph's team.

Vanessa started private violin lessons.

Eric is playing football.

Rex and Bruce are little kids who keep us busy.

Jared still works at Malt O-Meal, now called Mom Brands.  He enjoys his work and works with some remarkable people.

Recovery

My arm is continuing to recover from the cellulitis.  I'm still taking the antibiotics and benedryl but only have one day left.

We celebrated Eric's birthday and he got a cool camera that he loves.  Uncle Paul and his beautiful fiance Ashley came to Eric's ordination and came to our house for Sunday dinner and hanging out.  We had a really nice day and it is fun to get to know Ashley better.  We are excited for their upcoming marriage in October.  They look happy.

Football is getting ready to start.  Eric and Joseph are both playing again this year.  Vanessa just started private violin lessons with a lady in our neighborhood here.  She starts 8th grade at the school just a couple of houses down the street.  There are a lot of kids in our neighborhood here that are close in age to her and she has a lot of friends.

Update on Spider Bite and more...

Thanks Kimi for the get well wishes!

My arm is healing, although very slowly.  The antibiotics are doing their job nicely.  I am steadily seeing improvement.  The morning time is when my arm looks and feels the best.  As the hours go by throughout the day my arm swells more and it gets more painful.  I am still just hoping and hoping to avoid the surgery.  The doctor also told me that if the antibiotics don't clear out the infection, I'll have to go to the hospital for an IV drip of antibiotics.  But, since the swelling is going down more and more each day, I think I won't have to do that.

Lately, I have been thinking a lot about belief.  I went visiting teaching last month and while visiting with a woman in our church, the subject of dreams got brought up.  I made the comment that whether you believe the Lord is trying to send you a message in a dream or not depends upon your belief.  The woman said in a sarcastic tone, 'are you saying I don't believe?'  I was a little shocked by her statement, but took the opportunity to explain myself a little better.  I told her how I believe the Lord can speak to us or send us messages in dreams and that if you wonder if he is trying to send you a message in a dream, you can simply ask him.

For example, if you've had a dream where you were in a store staring at strawberries when it is the Sabbath day and you should be at church, you can ask Heavenly Father if he is trying to tell you that you are worshipping strawberries instead of Him.  You may laugh at this simple illustration, but this dream actually came to me.  And if you knew what my day was like the day before I had this dream you'd understand better.  That day I had bought some strawberries at the grocery store.  I was so stingy with my strawberries that I chased my 5 little ones out of the kitchen so I didn't have to share them.  So, do I think the Lord was telling me that my behavior was inappropriate?  Absolutely.

Now, I buy plenty of strawberries and I don't feel stingy with them!

Spider Bites

So, on Sunday sometime during the day, I was bitten by a spider.  4 times.  Two of the times I was bitten, it was on the back of my left arm in the fatty tissue there.  Well, by Tuesday night my arm was swollen pretty badly.  So, I called the doctors office first thing Wednesday morning and I was in the doctors office by 5pm.  Well, the swelling had gotten worse by then and the doctor was very concerned.  I, however, was shocked.  I didn't think it would be that big of a deal.  But I had to have a shot of antibiotics in my hip and then off to get a prescription of oral antibiotics and benedryl.  The doctor is really worried because if the infection gets into my elbow joint I'll have to have a surgery to clean out the infection.  If the swelling hasn't gone down significantly by Friday morning, I have to go back into the doctors office for another shot of antibiotics.  Wow, what an ordeal!  I was not prepared to have to go through this.  I thought the doctor was going to roll his eyes at me and tell me to go take some benedryl.  I almost didn't even make the appointment to go see him.

In other news, we are getting ready to celebrate Eric's 12 year old birthday this Saturday.

How Many Times...

I have a good feeling when I read this description of one man's feelings on forgiveness. What are the Savior’s guidelines in how many times we should allow a person to unforgivingly do something before we take action?

Question:  Gramps, I realize that when the Savior said that we are to forgive seventy times seven, the number is not as much realistic as it is symbolic, meaning a limitless amount of times. However, I have heard that the Lord has placed a limit to the number of times we should allow a person to unforgivingly do something to us before we take action against them. What are His guidelines in a situation like this, and where can I read to learn more about them? Stephen, from Arizona Dear Stephen,

Answer:  I think that you will find the answer to all your questions in the Doctrine and Covenants. The scripture that you refer to that could suggest some limitation to forgiveness is found in (D&C 98:38-48). Behold, this is an ensample unto all people, saith the Lord your God, for justification before me. Again, verily I say unto you, if after thine enemy has come upon thee the first time, he repent and come unto thee praying thy forgiveness, thou shalt forgive him, and shalt hold it no more as a testimony against thine enemy– And so on unto the second and third time; and as oft as thine enemy repenteth of the trespass wherewith he has trespassed against thee, thou shalt forgive him, until seventy times seven. And if he trespass against thee and repent not the first time, nevertheless thou shalt forgive him. And if he trespass against thee the second time, and repent not, nevertheless thou shalt forgive him. And if he trespass against thee the third time, and repent not, thou shalt also forgive him. But if he trespass against thee the fourth time thou shalt not forgive him, but shalt bring these testimonies before the Lord; and they shall not be blotted out until he repent and reward thee four-fold in all things wherewith he has trespassed against thee. And if he do this, thou shalt forgive him with all thine heart; and if he do not this, I, the Lord, will avenge thee of thine enemy an hundred- fold; And upon his children, and upon his children’s children of all them that hate me, unto the third and fourth generation. But if the children shall repent, or the children’s children, and turn to the Lord their God, with all their hearts and with all their might, mind, and strength, and restore four-fold for all their trespasses wherewith they have trespassed, or wherewith their fathers have trespassed, or their father’s fathers, then thine indignation shall be turned away; And vengeance shall no more come upon them, saith the Lord thy God, and their trespasses shall never be brought any more as a testimony before the Lord against them. Amen. This may sound at first like a contradiction. We have in the same passage the statement, thou shalt forgive him, until seventy times seven, and following that the statement, But if he trespass against thee the fourth time thou shalt not forgive him. The second use of the term “repent” means we should in that circumstance hold him accountable, and bring him before the tribunals of the Church, not out of vengance or for retribution, but so that he may be held accountable before the Lord for his actions. In such a circumstance we are to retain the attitude of a forgiving heart, in that we would be free of animosity and judgement. Because the Lord further says, I say unto you, that ye ought to forgive one another; for he that forgiveth not his brother his trespasses standeth condemned before the Lord; for there remaineth in him the greater sin. I, the Lord, will forgive whom I will forgive, but of you it is required to forgive all men. And ye ought to say in your hearts–let God judge between me and thee, and reward thee according to thy deeds. And him that repenteth not of his sins, and confesseth them not, ye shall bring before the church, and do with him as the scripture saith unto you, either by commandment or by revelation. And this ye shall do that God may be glorified–not because ye forgive not, having not compassion, but that ye may be justified in the eyes of the law, that ye may not offend him who is your lawgiver–Verily I say, for this cause ye shall do these things (D&C 64:9-14). So, as clarified in the second reference, a forgiving attitude is always required. Since we are incapable of seeing into the heart of another, we are blind to all but the outward appearance, and through our lack of knowledge of what is in a man’s heart we would be prone to error in any judgemnt that we might attempt. God is the judge, not man. How arrogant of any man to assume the prerogative of God by attempting to execute judgement against another! Forgiveness is a sweet and noble quality of the godly soul. Someone has said that forgiveness is the fragrance that the violet sheds on the heal that has crushed it. Gramps

Weekly Happenings

Vanessa just got back from Young Women's camp and reported that she had a good time. Jared got a steroid shot in his foot for his plantar facitis and jumped in the doctors chair from the pain. I have never seen Jared jump from pain. It scared me and my stomach dropped when he did that. Eric, Rex, Bruce, and I went to a fun splash pad with our sweet neighbor Amy and her son Matt two days ago. We had a blast! Bruce was shocked that I got in the water. In the car before we got to the pool, I asked him if he was excited to go swimming and he looked me in the eye with shock in his voice and said, "Are you excited?" I told him I was excited and then I committed in my mind to do it more because it broke my heart that my 2 year old son was shocked I wanted to go swimming with him. Rex is independent in the water and knows how to entertain himself. Eric was tentative to go down the waterslide, but after about 2 hours, he went down it. Then he went down the waterslide again. Joseph went to cub scout day camp up Ogden Canyon. He had a great time and loved the canoeing and buying things at the camp store the most.

Demise Part 3

So as I am walking out of the building in my dream and watching others running around in their own frenzy, I walk down some stairs away from the people running and toward a room filled with people who were hiding under their blankets. It looked like a graveyard of people side by side and hiding underneath their blankets. But, I wanted out of the building so I could go home so I walked right out the front door and onto the front lawn. It was dark outside and I found others there. They were each waiting for a car to come and get them to take them home. I went over to where they stood and began to wait for my ride to come get me and take me home. Standing there waiting was a fruitless thing for how was one to know when their ride would come to get them? So I determined to go back into the building and tell as many people as I could that they didn't need to be afraid of the demise or darkness or destroyer or whatever it was in their lives that had them afraid. So, the first person I went up to was a person who was rustling underneath their blanket. I lifted up the blanket and was excited to tell the person the good news and what did I find? I found that it was one of my favorite sisters underneath that blanket. (I have 5 sisters) And then I woke up. Ever since that dream, I have been on a mission to tell others about the lessons I have learned over the last few years of my life. I have wanted to tell as many people as I can that they can face the scary things in their lives with boldness and without fear. It has brought me great satisfaction to find many people eager to hear how to make their lives better.

Demise Part 2

In my dreams, I was running, running, running away from the destroyer. Whoever, or whatever it was that was coming to destroy me had me paralyzed. One night in my dream, I was running, running. For the first time the evil spoke directly to me. It said, 'you are next.' I ran into an office where there was a table in the center of the room. I climbed under the table, as if I could hide there. I found a blanket under the table and buried my face in the blanket. I could hear others running around still in the hallways of the building. There I sat under that table and waited to see if the darkness could find me. I hoped and hoped it wouldn't find me. But lo, within a few seconds the dark evil came right up to me. I was terrified and in disbelief that it had found me. As I sat there under my blanket, I began to remember that God is the one in charge and that if He wanted me destroyed at this moment in my life then this evil was given power from Him to destroy me. I decided to face the darkness. If I died, I died and was going home to my Father's home. I took the blanket off my face and saw the darkness right in front of me. It was dark, really, really dark. I looked at it right in the face. But it didn't harm me. It had no power to destroy me. So, I stood up and began making my way out of the building. On my way out, I saw many others frantically running around trying to get away from the darkness, their own pending doom, demise. I was determined to get out of this building and go home. The rest of the dream I'll save for another day. And the rest of the story is equally important. Demise is a powerful thing. None of us wants to lose anything we love and treasure. Are you running, running, running away from something in your life that you need to face? If so, let's talk about it. Let's face the fear so you can stop running. And this is coming from a woman who loves to run, although my bodily circumstances have changed, I still dearly, dearly love to run.

Demise

In my last post I briefly talked about the demise I felt in my parents home while growing up. Demise. Have you ever felt demise? Demise in my definition, or the way I am using it here, is that I felt a darkness inside me that led me to think some impending doom was coming to me. It came out in my dreams. I would have reoccurring dreams of someone or something bad chasing me. I would spend the entire dream running away from this evil something that was coming to destroy me. In the end, I would awaken from those dreams frenzied because I wondered if they got me. That came from the demise I felt everyday. Tell me your experiences with demise. What affect has demise played on you in your life?

Roles And Knowing Who You Are

It is 10:00am on Saturday morning and the older kids are still asleep. I remember when I was a child my parents didn't pay attention to when I went to bed, or when I got out of bed the next morning. My parents had 12 children and I am number 6. My mother went to work full time as a nurse when I was around 8 years old. When she did that my life changed dramatically. It wasn't long after that that my father separated from my mother. He moved out into an apartment about a mile away from our house. I went there only 1 time that I remember. I remember the night that my parents sat us kids down and told us about their separation or pending divorce, I can't remember which. I don't remember anything they said, only that my father wasn't going to be living with us anymore. I remember feeling really yucky inside. It was the second time in my life that I remember hurting really bad inside my heart. The first time was when I was 4 years old and I was punished for something I didn't do to my sibling. I was very angry that I wasn't allowed to tell my side of the story and that I was innocent of the charges for which I was accused and now paying the penalty for. But back to when my mother went to work full time and my father moved back in our house without telling us why or what was going on between them. I was glad my father was back, but still had the dark, unsettled feeling in my stomach that there was demise in our home. It was during this time in my life that I needed a lot of instruction and correction, as all 8-16 year olds need. The affect this had on me was that I grew extremely insecure about my role in our family and about my ability to be successful at school. I knew how to get good grades, but I was confused about what to become in life. When my parents decided to send my mother to work full time, grave shifts no less, they must have neglected to define how my mothers new role as a provider was going to affect her mothering. She nearly fell off the face of the earth as to mothering. It was like a death to me. My mother died in my life. So as my children are still asleep on Saturday morning, and I know they went to bed before 11:00pm last night, I am going to go downstairs and awake them from their slumber. I know my role as their mother. And after much struggle, I know my role as my Father in Heaven's daughter.

The Avengers

If you haven't seen this movie, you're not missing much. At least not missing much that is good from this movie. It was violent. We saw it in 3D. I was not impressed at all. That being said, the violence in today's movies is alarming to me. Violence is made to look cool. How many violent movies do we go to and make entertainment out of it. I had to remind my kids that it is never cool to see one human be violent with another. It has come to me numerous times to be so selective in our entertainment that we don't have to be surprised when the movie that we choose to see happens to be offensive.

I am making plans for the summer. Jared is carefully planning the camping and Bear Lake trips. I am equally matched in planning successful day to day activities. We will be doing 'stations' every day. There will be a WII station, art station, puzzle station, reading station, and then individual stations suited to the interests of each of our kids. Vanessa will have a violin station. Eric, Joseph and Rex will have a Lego station. All this with the hope that it will keep us on a schedule and make it so I don't get hounded all day about WII time. In other news, Disneyland California park tickets have gone up. It looks like we'll need a few extra months of saving money in order to make it on that vacation.

Opinions

As of late, I have been attracted to blogs where people speak their minds and give their opinions, seemingly unafraid. Having grown up in a family where my opinion was not respected, I realize I'm a little sensitive and maybe hyper sensitive to the fact that my opinions mean nothing. I admire a person who can give their opinion without that fear. It is more admirable to me to realize that families can stay intact when everyone doesn't agree. A goal worth fighting for in my own family.

Obama supports Gay Marriage, Romney too?

This article comes from the website: http://www.worldaffairsbrief.com/ OBAMA RISKS ALL ON GAY MARRIAGE SUPPORT Obama went public with his stance in favor of same-sex marriage and recommended it be recognized throughout the nation. It’s a risky move because this issue, like abortion, tends to polarize people throughout the nation. Bloomberg writes that “Even as opinion polls show growing approval of same-sex marriage nationally, opposition remains strong in some battleground states, as North Carolina voted to ban gay marriage and Colorado Republicans killed a measure to approve civil unions.” “I don’t think it could cost him the election, but I think they’re scared it might, and they don’t want to take the chance,” said Jim Williams, issue polling specialist for Public Policy Polling, a Raleigh, North Carolina-based Democratic research firm. “Politicians are cautious people. Public opinion on gay marriage is shifting very quickly.” Meanwhile Republican candidate Mitt Romney is mum on the issue (so far), after seeing the hiring of a neocon gay spokesman blow up in his face. He and his campaign made a serious tactical error by taking on a homosexual activist (Richard Grinnell as foreign policy spokesperson) to placate the homosexual lobby and assumed that Grinnell would confine his activism to Romney’s foreign policy (which was bad enough in itself). But Grinnell is also a persistent campaigner for same-sex marriage which is in opposition to Romney’s position. Grinnell either resigned or was let go (depending on the source) because he would not discontinue his public support for gay marriage. It was extremely naive of Romney to think a gay activist would self-censor, especially a neocon who came from globalist John Bolton’s staff at the UN. This move to bring Grinnell into his campaign sent yet another negative signal about Romney to evangelical conservatives who, sensing that Romney’s nomination is inevitable, wanted to believe that he wasn’t “that bad” after all. All the emerging goodwill that was starting to accrue to his candidacy eroded once again as Romney continues to show himself to be an unreliable conservative who can’t be trusted not to pander to both sides. Cold Sores

I took Bruce to the Doctor today. It was our first time at this particular doctor, Douglas Walker, and we really liked him. Logan is only 25 minutes away, but that is far enough that I decided to change doctors so that we can stay in our own city when we need to be seen. So, Bruce has cold sores instead of hand/foot/mouth disease. The doctor told us Bruce's case is as bad as it gets. So he gave us some strong pain medication, lortab, and an antiviral medicine to help it from getting worse. Hopefully little Bruce can get some relief now. He's asleep now.
